Cookies or chips? Your child’s choices may anticipate weight gain, study reveals(for more go to http://howpeopledo.com)

If your little ones crave more for sweets rather than salty snacks, then they are at a greater risk for gaining excess weight, a new study reveals.

The research published in the Pediatrics Journal indicates that people who are more inclined towards sweet products put themselves at an increased risk of obesity.

For the research, scientists from the University of Michigan’s C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital asked more than 200 low-income mothers to have their children fast for an hour before providing them with a substantial lunch.

The children were then offered a tray of snacks containing both sweet treats such as chocolate chip cookies and salty ones such as potato chips and were told that they could eat without any restrains.

Later, it was discovered that those who consumed more and showed the desire to eat sweet over salty snacks were at a greater risk for developing increased body fat by the time they were about 3 years old.

The leading author of the study, Dr. Julie C. Lumeng, a developmental and behavioral pediatrician from the University of Michigan’s C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital, said that the findings suggest some people could be genetically predisposed to have a sweet tooth, making them more susceptible to obesity, which is unhealthy.

She also said that the findings suggest the craving for sweet taste is perhaps biologically-linked and some babies are just born having more liking for desserts than others.

Lumeng said, for these children, parents should devote extra attention about what they eat and what they don’t eat. However, she also adds by saying that the liking for sweet foods is perhaps not something that can be completely overcome.

If you observe in your children, when they are one or two years old that they show greater liking for sweet foods, then it may be a sign that they were just born that way and you may need to strictly monitor the variety of food you keep in your home, maybe a closer watch than with another child or sibling.

One of the clinical dietitians at Montefiore Medical Center in New York City, Lauren Graf, advice parents to develop healthier ways to satiate their child’s sweet tooth. Habituating children to healthy foods, such as vegetables and fruits, is extremely vital in developing their tastes. The foundation of the healthy diet is laid down in early childhood days.

Don’t Forget About the 2017 Dirty Dozen List: Most Pesticide-Tainted Produce(for more go to http://howpeopledo.com)

Every year the Environmental Working Group (EWG) puts out a list of the 12 types of produce that contain the most pesticides. The group analyzes tests by the U.S. Department of Agriculture for the list. The list was released in the beginning of the year, but it’s important to browse the list multiple times so the information is at your fingertips. [1]

This year, the EWG found that close to 70% of samples of 48 types of conventional produce contained residues of 1 or more pesticides. In all, USDA researchers found 178 different pesticides and pesticide breakdown products in the samples of produce, which numbered in the thousands. These chemicals remained on the produce even after they were washed and, in some cases, peeled.

In a news release, Sonya Lunder, an EWG senior analyst, says:

“If you don’t want to feed your family food contaminated with pesticides, the EWG Shopper’s Guide helps you make smart choices, whether you’re buying conventional or organic produce.

Eating of fruits and vegetables is essential no matter how they’re grown, but for the items with the heaviest pesticide loads, we urge shoppers to buy organic. If you can’t buy organic, the Shopper’s Guide will steer you to conventionally grown produce that is the lowest in pesticides.” [1]

Choosing produce with the least amount of pesticides is vital to the health of children, Lunder says.

“Even low levels of pesticide exposure can be harmful to infants, babies and young children, so when possible, parents and caregivers should take steps to lower children’s exposures to pesticides while still feeding them diets rich in healthy fruits and vegetables.” [1]

The “Dirty Dozen” List

Strawberries are at the top of the list because the USDA found that the most contaminated sample of the fruit had 20 different pesticides. [1]

New to the list this year is pears and potatoes, displacing cherry tomatoes and cucumbers from last year’s list.

At least one pesticide residue was found on nearly all of the strawberries, spinach, peaches, nectarines, cherries, and apples.

On average, the spinach samples contained twice as much pesticide residue by weight than any other crop. In fact, EWG says 3/4 of spinach samples were contaminated with residues of a neurotoxic pesticide banned in Europe for use on food crops. It is part of a group of pesticides that have been linked to behavioral disorders in young children in recent studies.

You can find the full list of 51 types of produce on EWG’s website.

The “Clean 15”

Not every fruit and vegetable is coated in chemicals, fortunately, and the EWG also made a list of the types of produce that are least likely to contain pesticide residues.

13 Actresses Known for Roles Opposite to Who They Are in Real Life(for more go to http://howpeopledo.com)

It’s an actresses job to act (duh). It can’t be all too surprising some actresses don’t necessarily identify with their characters. Many of the most popular cinematic villains and heroines are played by actresses who say they don’t have the time or the energy to be that bad or good in real life. It stands there are so many actresses who are different than their characters.

Game of Thrones‘s Lena Headey is one of those actresses who are nothing like their characters. She’s a self-described “clumsy nerd” who has never wine-boarded anyone, nor slept with a relative. Gilmore Girls‘s Alexis Bledel is another of these actresses known for roles that are nothing like they are. She’s even mentioned her belief that Rory Gilmore is too perfect. Maybe that’s the reason she nearly showed some nip on Mad Men?

Of the many Hollywood actresses who are different than their characters, which do you think are the most dissimilar? Cast your votes below!

Alexis Bledel

In real life: Alexis Bledel is a normal person who isn’t perfect. She also hates coffee. And she has a child with Vincent Kartheiser, formerly Pete on Mad Men. Sure, she dated Milo Ventimiglia (Jess from Gilmore Girls), but it was probably way more steamy in real life, right?

In film and TV roles: Bledel met her husband when she played his mistress, revealing there’s more to the actress than Rory Gilmore. To many, those are fightin’ words, but even Bledel has said Rory was too good to be true, and she was “annoyed” by the character’s perfection. The actress has returned for the Gilmore Girls revival A Year in the Life on Netflix, and this time around Rory’s got more cracks in her facade.

Notable quote: “I just want to live each moment, but it’s kind of hard to do that when you are asked to analyze yourself constantly. But it’s also good in that you are forced to think about things that you don’t ordinarily think about. I think it’s strange.”

5 Easy, Delish And Healthy Superfood Recipes For Healing(for more go to http://howpeopledo.com)

I’d been a food writer for more than five years, exploring the world by way of the plate, before I started feeling sick. It started with embarrassing conditions, like chronic constipation and sudden, but intense, waves of nausea. I had a colonoscopy at 27, trying in vain to get to the root of my digestive issues. A slew of serious and expensive prescription medications followed, each with its own roll call of scary side effects. And still, years later, nothing worked.

Related Article: Simple Ways To Doctor Your Meals Into Healing Foods

So I decided to go cold turkey on all medications, including going off birth control pills for the first time in more than a decade. What followed was even worse—horrible acne, rapid and unexplained weight gain around my midsection, irregular periods with painful PMS symptoms, and those same digestive issues. At the end of my rope, tired of being dismissed by conventional doctors who just threw medication at my symptoms, I turned to a holistic and integrative medicine MD who actually wanted to get to the root cause. Dr. Taz really listened to me—she used blood work and other test results, coupled with my anecdotal symptoms, to diagnose me with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), leaky gut and hypothyroidism.

This is where my story takes a turn for happily ever after. As it happens, all of these conditions are reversible through diet, natural supplements and holistic lifestyle changes. After following an all-natural plan, I now live a near symptom-free life. It’s true what they say—food is medicine.

I have been blown away by the huge impact the simple changes I’ve made have had on my health. By getting rid of toxins and other harmful ingredients in my food, beauty supplies and household products, I’ve finally healed my body. And I’ve done so safely and naturally. A natural lifestyle focused on real, whole foods that are anti-inflammatory and full of nutrients works—I am living proof!

Here’s Even More Evidence That Fish Oil Is Good for You(for more go to http://howpeopledo.com)

Doctors and health officials have long urged the public to eat more fish, since the healthy fats in fish—primarily from the omega-3 family—tend to lower risk of heart attacks and other heart problems. In fact, the most recent dietary guidelines recommend that Americans eat more fatty fish per week. (About half of Americans don’t eat any fish at all, or consume it only occasionally.)

But lately, there’s been confusion over whether the benefits of omega-3 fatty acids from food or supplements actually lead to healthier hearts and fewer cases of heart disease. For example, some studies suggest that fish oil supplements, which contain the active ingredients eicosapentaenoic (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acids (DHA), may not lower risk of having a heart attack, but may lead to fewer fatal ones.

In a study published in the Mayo Clinic Proceedings, researchers reviewing 34 studies on EPA and DHA from food and supplements, as well as heart disease risk, found evidence of the benefits of omega-3 fats in reducing heart problems. There is a caveat, however: the study was funded by the Global Organization for EPA and DHA Omega-3s (GOED), a group of makers and marketers of fish oil products. According to the study authors, GOED did not play a role in the design or interpretation of the study results.

The analysis included gold-standard clinical trials—in which people were randomly assigned to take omega-3s or not, then followed for their heart disease outcomes—as well as population-based studies, which looked for trends among people eating or taking omega-3s and those who did not over longer periods of time. Overall, those consuming more fish oil in the population studies lowered their risk by 18%.

Among the people participating in the clinical trials, those at higher risk of developing heart disease seemed to benefit more from the fish oil. In people with high triglyceride levels, coronary heart disease risk dropped 16%, and 14% in people with high LDL cholesterol.

While the results suggest that EPA and DHA may help to lower heart disease risk, experts point out that population studies may be biased toward finding benefit, since people who take omega-3 fatty acids may also engage in healthier behaviors like exercising regularly, avoiding smoking and eating healthy diets while avoiding high sodium foods.

Ongoing clinical trials looking at the effect of omega-3 supplements on heart disease risk—and taking into account the potential effects of things like exercise and diet—may provide a more definitive answer on whether fish oil pills are really worth the money. Until then, heart experts say it’s best to stick with the natural sources by eating at least two servings of salmon, tuna or other fatty fish a week.

Top 10 Reasons Earth Is Flat(for more go to http://howpeopledo.com)

Technology has reached an advanced level and science has been able to offer us evidence that the Earth is round (or if you want a precise term – an oblate spheroid). However, even today you have people ready to believe the claims that we thought were gone during the Middle Ages. These guys are convinced that the Earth is flat, despite all the satellite images and other things that claim otherwise. Here are the top 10 reasons why to believe their theory.

#10 Satellite Images Are Fake

Satellite Images Are Fake

The flat Earth theorists don’t actually have any evidence to support their own theory, unlike their counterparts (that is, normal people). However, they are prepared not to accept all the images and other materials coming from satellites. It doesn’t matter that William Anders got the picture of the Earthrise from the Moon itself in 1968, which clearly shows that the Earth is round and moving. All those photos are not worth anything, claim the flat-Earthers, simply because they are faked.

SLU expert suggests viewing exercise as daily contribution that offers cumulative health benefits(for more go to http://howpeopledo.com)

Have you already faltered on your New Year’s resolution to exercise regularly in 2017? Joined a gym, but only worked out two days so far? New workout gear still neatly folded with tags attached? Don’t give up your admirable ambition just yet. Instead, consider a new attitude to refocus your approach toward your exercise goal.

Exercise for the sake of weight loss can be a difficult commitment, especially if you aren’t in the habit of working up a sweat. The truth is that while exercise is a great support in losing weight, it’s difficult to lose a significant amount of weight through exercise alone. You may be surprised to see that you burned fewer than 200 calories in what felt like an exhausting, energy-burning 30 minute session on the treadmill. And, if you dramatically increase your exercise time, it can be easy to up your calorie intake as you find your appetite increasing in response.

Ethel Frese, DPT, professor of physical therapy who teaches exercise physiology at Saint Louis University, suggests that instead of viewing exercise as a chore on your weight loss “to do list,” consider instead how daily exercise will contribute a long list of health benefits that will improve your quality of life.

“Rather than seeing daily exercise as a one-time herculean effort to lose x number of pounds, I like to see exercise as a daily contribution to your health that offers increasing, cumulative benefits to your quality of life,” Frese said. “It’s a great thing you can do for your day. You give yourself a mood boost, an energy boost, more oxygen flowing to the brain, your mind works better, you have a sense of accomplishment you can bring to the next thing you attempt and you have better strength and stamina.

“And, in the longer term, you take control of your risk factors for so many illnesses. While genetics plays a big role in our health, we can tip the scale in our favor with exercise.

“Finally, as an added bonus, exercise can double as social time, outdoors time, housecleaning or yard work time, play time, sports time or philanthropy time.”

The researched benefits of exercise are too numerous to list here, so we’ve gathered a few highlights to spark your motivation. Check with your healthcare provider before beginning a challenging new exercise program or if you have specific health issues, like heart disease or knee pain, to make sure that your plans are on track.

Joy of Life: One of the most striking benefits of exercise is something researchers call “joy of life.” Studies find that people who exercise typically have a more positive view of life and feel better about themselves and life in general, Frese says.

Stress Relief: “Exercise is wonderful for managing stress,” Frese says. Exercise reduces stress hormones and boosts “feel good” neurotransmitter endorphins.

Sleep: Exercise can lead to better sleep.

Cognition: Studies show that exercise supports your brain, leading to improved memory and thinking.

Dementia: Research suggests that exercise may help reduce dementia symptoms, including those from Alzheimer’s disease.

Preventing Falls: Strength and balance training can decrease the likelihood of falls for older adults. As we age, we lose fast twitch high tension muscle fibers, making it more likely that we will fall. Exercise can rebuild these fibers.

Staying Independent: Falls and frailty can lead to the end of independent living for older adults, who may need to transition to a skilled nursing facility. Exercise can help older adults maintain their independence longer.

Heart: Exercise decreases the risk for heart disease, which is still the number one killer in the U.S. And, if you have already had bypass surgery, exercise decreases your risk of having another event.

Bones: Weight-bearing exercise, like walking, weight lifting or jumping rope, is great for our bones, preventing the bone loss that leads to osteoporosis.

Muscles: Strength training is key to maintaining muscle mass, especially as we age.

Blood Pressure: Aerobic exercise helps lower blood pressure. Hypertension is one of many health issues that we have some control over and exercise is one way to manage high blood pressure.

Blood Sugar: Both aerobic and weight-bearing exercise are great for glucose control, insulin sensitivity and reducing risk of type 2 diabetes, a disease that is now regularly appearing in children as well as adults.

Cancer: Certain cancers, including colon and breast cancer respond to exercise; you are far less likely to get these cancers if you exercise on a regular basis.

Arthritis: Our joints are made to move. Exercise can help with arthritis, though it’s important to choose an exercise that doesn’t cause pain or lead to flares in joint inflammation. Elliptical machines and aquatics classes are good options to consider with your doctor.

Pain: Certain types of chronic pain can be helped through exercise. Pain from fibromyalgia, cancer treatments and fatigue can benefit from exercise. Exercise and increased strength also can prevent and delay the need for surgery for pain. A physical therapy evaluation can be helpful to understand where pain is located, what brings it on and how strength training can help.

Weight Loss: Finally, exercise really does support weight loss. The more muscle mass you have, the more metabolically active your body will be. This means you will burn more calories all the time, even when you are at rest.

A final piece of advice from Frese: If you’re ready to re-commit to daily exercise, be sure to find activities that are right for you. Exercise doesn’t have to mean time at the gym. Find something that is appropriate for your current fitness level and is something that you enjoy and will look forward to each day.

These Are the Best (and Worst) Diets of 2017, According to U.S. News(for more go to http://howpeopledo.com)

For the seventh year in a row, the DASH diet has been named the United States’ best diet overall by U.S. News & World Report in its annual rankings. The Mediterranean diet came in second (up from last year’s fourth place) and the MIND Diet—a plan that’s similar to the top two but focuses on preventing cognitive decline—took third place, down from second last year.

DASH, which stands for dietary approaches to stopping hypertension, was originally developed to help people lower their blood pressure, but its focus on low-fat, low-sodium, and plant-based meals has also been linked to a whole host of other health benefits.

There are no new surprises in this top group of diets—and in a way, that’s a surprise in itself, says David Katz, MD, director of the Yale University Prevention Research Center and one of the panelists tasked with evaluating the entries.

“With all of the competing headlines about sugar and saturated fat and this study and that study, the reality is that if you pull together a multidisciplinary group of nutrition experts, their conclusions are remarkably stable over time,” Dr. Katz told Health. “What makes diets fundamentally good, for weight control or for health, is pretty much the same as it ever was.”

Specifically, Dr. Katz stresses that a focus on wholesome foods, and a method you can stick with over time, are strong indicators that a diet is worth trying. “The ‘best’ diet, like the best exercise, is the one you actually manage to practice and maintain,” he says.

RELATED: The Ketogenic Diet May Be the Next Big Weight Loss Trend, But Should You Try It?

The Flexitarian diet, Mayo Clinic Diet, TLC Diet, and Weight Watchers all fared well in the best overall category, forming a four-way tie for fourth place. The rankings also includes winners for Best Weight-Loss Diet (Weight Watchers), Best Fast Weight-Loss Diet (HMR Program), Easiest Diet to Follow (Fertility Diet), Best Diet for Healthy Eating (DASH Diet), Best Plant-Based Diet (Mediterranean Diet), the best diet marketed to consumers (Mayo Clinic Diet), and the best diet for diabetes and heart disease (DASH diet).

“On the one hand, a diet that’s good for your heart is going to be good for weight loss and is also going to be good for cancer and pretty much everything else,” says Dr. Katz. “That’s the really fortunate thing. But that being said, you can still customize your diet choice based on a particular priority you have and the style you think will work best for you.”

At the other end of the spectrum, the Whole30 was the lowest ranked overall diet for the second year in a row. The trendy Dukan and Paleo diets also ranked toward the bottom of the list. These plans are too restrictive and unnecessarily wipe out entire food groups, said the expert panel, and are too difficult to follow for a long time.

The entire list of Best Diets—including a detailed profile of each diet, along with sample food diaries and recipes—was published this morning on the U.S. News website.

An estimated 45 million Americans go on diets every year, either for weight-loss or health purposes. This year, 38 different diets were considered by the U.S. News panel of nutritionists, dietary consultants, and physicians specializing in diabetes, weight loss, and heart health.

“Our Best Diet rankings provide the millions of people around the world looking to make a lifestyle change a place to jumpstart their health and fitness goals,” said Angela Haupt, Assistant Managing Editor of Health at U.S. News, in a press release. “Best Diets provides each person a chance to evaluate what diet will work best for them and their particular needs.”

4 Ridiculously Easy Diet Changes to Help Kickstart Your Weight Loss(for more go to http://howpeopledo.com)

If you want to shed some pounds, but you’re not into the idea of a complicated diet with hard-to-remember rules, you’ve come to the right place. These four simple changes will help you lose weight fast, and get you back into your favorite jeans in no time. The best part: there’s no “cleansing” required.

Make veggies the star of your meals

Time to load up on those vegetables. I’m talking at least one to two cups (a cup is the size of a tennis ball) at each meal, even breakfast. In addition to being low in calories, veggies are rich in nutrients and high in both fiber and water. By making them the main component of every meal, you’ll eat fewer calories without sacrificing nutrition, and you’ll still feel full.

For breakfast, scramble a few eggs in extra-virgin olive oil, Italian seasoning, turmeric, and black pepper, with a handful or two of chopped veggies, like spinach, tomatoes, mushrooms, and bell pepper; enjoy with a side of fresh fruit. At lunch, opt for a salad rather than a sandwich or wrap. And whip up dinners comprised of “noodles” or “rice” made from veggies (spiralized, chopped, or shredded) paired with a lean source of protein (like salmon, chicken breast, or lentils) and a healthy fat (such as avocado, nuts, or seeds).

RELATED: 16 Ways to Lose Weight Fast

Load up on liquids

If you start your day with coffee, go ahead make it the usual way (even if that includes some sweetener). But limit yourself to just one cup. Then switch to water, or an antioxidant-rich, unsweetened tea (iced or hot); and try to have four 16-ounce servings throughout the course of the day. If you’re craving a little flavor in your water or tea, add fresh mint, basil, ginger root, or a bit of mashed berries.

However, be sure to nix any other drinks that contain sweeteners (even zero-calorie versions) or bubbles. The former may stoke a sweet tooth, or wreak havoc on your appetite, while the latter can leave you bloated. Also take note: To ensure a good night’s sleep, stop drinking any caffeinated tea at least six hours before bed. And cut off all fluids, even water, fairly early in the evening to avoid late night trips to the bathroom.

Streamline your snacks

You should really only snack under two circumstances. The first is when you’re truly, physically hungry (and not just bored or procrastinating or in the habit of nibbling at a certain time of day). The second is when you need some nourishment to tie you over between meals. For example, if you have lunch at noon and dinner isn’t till 7 p.m., a healthy snack can keep your metabolism revved, and help stabilize your blood sugar, insulin, and energy levels to prevent overeating later on.

In lieu of processed foods, like chips or sweetened bars, commit to noshing on something more nutritious. Try a golf ball-sized portion of nuts or seeds along with a tennis ball-sized serving of fruit; or a cup of raw veggies (like sliced red bell pepper and cucumber) paired with hummus or roasted chickpeas.

Make dark chocolate your sweet treat

Over the next month, try this simple experiment that’s helped many of my clients in a major way: Build what I call a “dark chocolate escape” into your day. That means enjoying a few squares of high-quality dark chocolate (with at least 70% cacao) during “you time,” without any distractions. So no laptop, no TV, and no phone.

Research shows that a small, daily dark chocolate indulgence curbs cravings for both sweet and salty foods. This trick can help you resist temptation for other goodies. Having one square after lunch and one after dinner may be a smart way to break up your treat, and keep your sweet and/or salt tooth adequately satisfied.
